The Legend of Owen Schmitt
“Daddy who was Owen Schmitt”
Asked his son one Saturday
His father paused a moment,
Deciding what to say.
“He’s a Mountaineer legend to this day
And I’ll tell you so you’ll see
The story of Big Owen Schmitt.”
He began quite poignantly…
There’s his forum, Mountaineer Field
His father pointed out
Our fans - they love him for what he is

And what he did, no doubt.
The Blue Lot was full and the sun was high
No better day to learn
The epic of the Legend
And how he got his turn.
To come to play in Morgantown
To leave it on the field
To play with heart and play with fire
And to never, ever yield.
A crown gathered ‘round as his father spoke
The little boy just stared
Owen Schmitt was just a walk-on
And thought that no-one cared.
From high school ball in Fairfax
To Wisconsin-River Falls
The all-district fullback ran ‘em down
And listened to the call.
Division I said no to him
The Fridge was still a fool
Turning down the Legend
To send him west to school
In Morgantown the walk-on
Said he’d play for free
“Just give me a chance” he told the coach
I’ll play and then you’ll see
He sat out a year and learned his trade
Even better, so to speak
It was clear by spring ball 2005
That we truly had a freak
The hits resounded like thunder claps,
His runs were strong and fast
He was big and quick and really nice
We thought “this will never last”
We run the spread, he is way too big
He’s too far down the chart
This Gwaltney kid is gonna make
Rodriguez look so smart.
The crowd had grown, they all were still
His son just sat and stared
The Pride was warming up near by
But moving, no one dared…
It was Maryland in 2005
He showed that he could play.
80 yards and a score in a cloud of dust
Big O was here to stay.
The fans all stood and cheered a man
Who played the game with lust
The Legend, he was born that day
And we knew he was not a bust.
For Louisville was his coming out
Though Super Steve stole the show
In overtime, from two simple plays
His legend, it did grow.
Another broken facemask,
Another bloody lip
Another tackler in his wake
With the football in his grip.
By the Sugar Bowl, Big O was set
His legacy confirmed.
But 52 yards straight up the gut
The Bulldog defense it just squirmed.
In the following years,
Big Owen played with heart and with desire
He played for all the walk-ons
He was a Mountaineer on fire.
He loved to block and run the ball
Make a catch or even punt
He’d knock you down, stomp on your chest
And never even grunt.
By 2008 in the Fiesta Bowl,
The Legend stood his ground
The first touchdown was scored by him
And the cheering did resound.
His blocks were good, he tackled well
And ran the ball with ease
For the fans of West Virginia
The result was sure to please.
Owen thanked us in his interview
For letting him come play.
No, thank you Owen for all you’ve done
And for showing us the way.
You play with heart, you play with pride
You never, ever quit
You will always be a Mountaineer
In the NFL you’ll fit.
The best fullback to play the game
For our beloved Mountaineers.
The father told his son that day
Amidst the growing cheers.
“C’mon my son, the game is soon
We’ll catch pregame show.”
As The Pride of West Virginia plays
And the Legend still it grows.
Thank you, Owen for your classy play
And I hope that we should see
That soon you’ll be rewarded with
The Mountaineer Team MVP.
