Gaaahh you're all wrong :) Nena's guitarist was at a Rolling Stones concert in Berlin Germany and noticed that balloons were being released. He saw them moving towards the soviet sector and what would happen if they went over the wall. The song tells the story of 99 red balloons floating through the air and causing an apocalyptic overreaction by military forces. It did come out during the cold war and has ties to it, but the story it tells is completely fictional :) |
