i think that we have to stop putting cultures down and start looking at the similarities in culture and also i think that kids need to really learn about cultures. but how can they when a teacher drones on. it doesnt keep them interested. I think we are of the same mind on the subject. im not very knowlefgeable about japanese history i just understand the stuff i've read and watched on the television and talking to others about it. i appreciate the comment. thank you.

yeah, that sounds about right, brotherdevil. I've read some about it in the Dave Lowrey book Autumn Lightning. and yes, it truly is different to think about how the culture believed in patriotism. there should be people out there investigating more cultures rather than berating them upon first glance because what does that say about our culture? (not saying you did, but I see some people here don't understand japanese histroy so well) Thanks for your comment, brotherdevil.

I read somewhere /saw on a doco that there was once a Samurai that decapitated HIMSELF when he knew that the odds were against him. Thats pretty amazing if you think about it, the discipline and the psychology that is required to perform such things..

actually the japanese hara kiri was suicide but they would stab themself in the belly and if they were fortunate to have served there master well, they would be allowed a friend to cut their head off at the point of massive pain from stabbing himself. this was done in tenko and a few other documentries. the samurai's whole life was to prepare for death and so if he had done something dishonorable or as u say lost a battle yes ritual suicide would of been done.
