Same version I use to sing when I was in High School, College, and some of the Churches I have been in. How can you top the Mormon Tabernacle Choir? Wonderful as we have come to expect them to be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea. With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me. As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free while God is marching on......

The song was written by Julia Ward Howe in 1861. Over time, with the increasing use of the song in a non-military environment, the line became "let us live to make men free", and the sixth verse was generally not sung. It is, in my opinion, far more powerful to hear "let us die to make men free".

oh, because in the hymn book (mormon hymn book) the lyrics are as he died to make men holy, let us live to make men free... and in choir we also sang it live to make men free, i guess its just a difference of opinion for the conductor of which he/she prefers. i personally like the live to make men free, because it feels more like we are taking advantage of the sacrifice he made.

The proper lyrics are "As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free".
