Delenda... Again, my point is that IT DOESN'T MATTER if the piece is sacred or secular. Not to me, anyway. It's a beautiful piece of music, either way. It can be appreciated on different levels. Some may not like that, but that is the case.
Thanks for answering my question. I have not "studied elementary musicology," so your point was not obviously to me.

Music can be sacred without religious texts applied to it. Anyone who has studied elementary musicology would know this.
Also, it is silly to argue that because someone waited 31 years to apply a text to it that it therefore is really a secular work. Classic non sequitur.

But the fact is that the greatest music in history (from all over the world) is birthed in the liturgical traditions of the world's religions. The Church has always been the greatest patron and inspiration for artists to create something transcendental. Atheistic premises do not admit any transcendental existence and so are locked in the prison of mere subjective self-expression.

All good artists are emotional. That's how they create art.

Beautiful music does not have to be religious, the meaning of this song is Christ, being the lamb of God 'Angus Dei' I believe Christ existed but I do not believe in God, many a good man has died for what he believes in that does not make him a son of something Devine, nor does it prevent him/her from enjoying beautiful music. |
