As i was reading the lottery i was thinking it was about a nice summer with friendly people having fun and someone winning the lottery, but shirley jackson fooled the hell out of me. I kind felt that tessy forshadowed the whole story mainly because she was late to the lottery and she went against it by putting her own kids into it saying that it was not fair.

This doesn't need to be analyzed to death - it's just damn good creepy fiction. They showed this to us my Freshman year in high school and we loved it. Not everything has to have some huge cosmic meaning behind it. This is just a good story.

Evil psychology to undermine average Americans.. making them look like Zealots They seem like "good church people"(clothes glasses, manners). Remember education has been messed up..Still is. Categorize/label people(nerds, crazies, evil Christians) Multi levels of purpose/meaning. Subvert Christians, OK to hurt parents. (GetIT?) Comparison to voluntary sacrifice as w/Aztecs(Exterminated)Show neg. potential in GOOD people? They're too crazy to MOVE AWAY? Why shown in my 5th gr?= BRAINWASHING

I believe S. Jackson was trying to show the consequences of hanging on to old superstitions and beliefs, particularly ones without any backing at all, or even reason to believe without brainwashing. Here's a (fictional) case where every year a person is killed, perhaps a small child, to protect their crop yield. Things like this still happen today in the middle east where people kill for religion. Blind faith gets people in big trouble. This is the result of not questioning things.

the only reason my lit class found for them to do it is for a good harvest because they do it near the summer solstice stupid reason!!
