Who said he never tried it in practice and found it ineffective for himself? If you've ever seen Shaq shoot at the line, the problem isn't his form, it's his power and touch. Besides, looking back at his career, it's not like it was that big of a problem. ;) Like Auerbach and Barry point out, what works for one player may not work for others.

You said a mouthful! Wilt gave in after a couple of years struggling doing it the "modern" way and switched to underhand. He never was an ace foul shooter but it helped him score some valuable points.

It's such a dumb and easy shot that it makes it almost impossible to get accurately !!! Gotta love NBA Legends.

Shaq should have let his pride go, and shot like this throughout his career.....he's KILL. He's look like an idiot, but easily have 5 more PPG in the playoffs (cuz they foul him so much)

Same here. I personally wish that there was somebody in the NBA today that had the balls to shoot free throws like this.

Red is a genius. There is no perfect way to shoot Free Throws. Just make it your way. Damn I'mm gonna try Rick Barry style now
