I have to say; I don't think peak oil is all bad... people need to change, even if they are forced to...
Grow food, not lawns!

start by saving ALL your clippings, scraps, cut branches, dead leaves and everything your neighbors wanna give you...and make some compost piles, the next thing is to grow cover crops to nourish whatever barren spots you have....and finally do a study of what grows well there ALREADY and their growing habits and maximize on that. Finally, get it all organized, in terms of space, existing natural features, and individual plant requirements....and the rest is surprisingly easy...

Great stuff! It's so good to see people doing this.

Corn ethanol isn't very efficient, energy-wise. Folks with Post Carbon Institute are experimenting with Energy Farms -- small scale growing of sorghum (like sugar beets), which have higher energy return than corn. They're asking the same question you are -- what can we grow ourselves? How much do we need? Great questions you ask.

We're on the edge of a fuel crisis...houses are being abandoned and values are plummeting. What if we gave up on curb appeal and used everyones back yard for corn biodiesel? All of our money goes to the middle east. There's so much land that could be used. With grey water and composting could it fly? We're faced with an economic crisis.
