In base 8, 342 - 173 does in fact equal 147.

I wasn't fond of math in high school but I think it was more of a way to rebel against my parents rather than a genuine dislike of it. I'd like to really learn it properly. Sorry to hear about the changes to your educational system. Sounds like they're trying to fix what isn't broken. Typical bureaucratic meddling by people who don't know what they're doing.

Even with this techniques there are people who hate math :) But I am one of those who enjoy learning and teaching it!Unfortunately,we are now changing our education system and I`m afraid that it`s not going to be better but worse.

Then obviously your techniques are much more effective than what they use here. There have been reports that math education techniques used in other countries (such as yours) are much more effective at teaching math than what's used here. The big problem is that the education establishment is very resistant to change and they have a "it wasn't invented here" mentality regarding non-US teaching techniques. It's a shame but that's how it is. There are a few trailblazers but not many.
