Got to concur Shillbasher, first time I saw this too was on Later..Live and I was completey captivated by it and haunted describes how it left me. Slightly melancholic but at the same time uplifting, a true classic.

Marvelous comment I agree completely, you've captured the very essence of the song.
I only just heard this 2 days ago on "Later with Jools Holland" and I now can't get it out of my mind. I'm haunted by it somehow, it's like ghosts from the past have come to show me a more innocent time. The air was clean and crisp when this song was written. It's just a song about a lonely man who dearly misses the love of his life. And yet it conveys so much more than that.

You get it- but how about the British seaman? We're not that different.

As an Englishman one of the things that has always drawn me to this song is the evocative American-ness of it. A perfect piece of music from start to finish, the lyrics sorrowful but never sad, there's a feeling of being enveloped by wide open spaces, a far off horizon, and the lineman's solitude. Just wonderful, and a wonderful version too.
