If those methods seem shabby to you, you may also look up recent data accumulated by NASA's AVIRIS system, which contains data of a different sort, but which leads to similar conclusions.

There are many ways to sample atmospheric constitution other than sampling air directly, and we have data stretching back hundreds of thousands of years. Ice core samples, fossilized organic matter, and geological strata are just a few of the ways scientists have gathered data. We have a very good idea of atmospheric constituents from well before written human history, in addition to at least 50 years of accurate direct sampling. One volcanic eruption does not drastically change this average.

Volcanic averages change with every eruption...considering the amount of volcanic activity this year my guess is that the average is much higher than 130 million tons this year....plus volcanos have been erupting long before recorded human history....who knows what the average really is!

Thank you! It's nice to see someone who knows their stuff post on here :)

For all the people who are commenting about
CO2 emissions: if you'd all do a little research before you started spouting off, you'd learn that the amount of CO2 contributed to the atmosphere via volcanic activity is minor compared to human endeavors. More specifically, it ammounts to approximately 1/150th the amount contributed by human endeavors. Volcanic activity averages a total of 130 million tons/year, while ONE power company in the US put out over 170 million tons in 2006.
