For eighteen years on Los Angeles television, Sheriff John Rovick entertained children; in particular remembering a host of birthday names on every day's broadcast. He'll be best remembered for the songs "Laugh and Be Happy" and "The Birthday Song" (Put Another Candle on the Birthday Cake). Still living in rural Idaho, Sheriff John will long be remembered as a model of goodness and a sincere encouragement to every child. Long Live Sheriff John! (from the 1984 broadcast of "Weekday Heroes"; used by permission)

I just had my 59th birthday and the family sang "Put another candle on my birthday cake...." I almost cried. Thanks so much for posting this

I don't understand why stations took off the Sheriff Johns, Texas Bruces, Corky the Clowns, Captain 11s, Bozos, and Romper Rooms. Did children stop appreciating hosts who cared about them? No, they didn't. We knew that thanks to Fred Rogers and Bob Keeshan. Put it down to greed, and a cynical, supercilious, hatred of "corn", heart, magic, and love for children just for who they were. All we have left is Krusty on THE SIMPSONS, a sad parody of a lost golden age of afternoon television.

Yet another great memory! I remember this from when I was something like two or three years old living in Los Angeles back in the '60s. Thank you!

Boy, this brings back good memories! This was such a great kids' show. I was born in 1951. My dad bought our first television around 1953 because Mary Martin's Peter Pan show was scheduled to be broadcast. I remember watching Sheriff John daily in the L.A. area as I sat in a miniature rocking chair, eating apple wedges. We moved from the area in 1960 and I really missed Sheriff John; however, Sacramento had Captain Sacto whom I then watched for years =)

Oh my God, I LOVED this when I was a kid!! Watching Sherriff John is probably one of my earliest memories growing up....I can still see my brother and myself sitting in front of our old cheezy blacka and white tv set, singing along to the songs..hell, I still know the lyrics by heart!

We have gone from Sheriff John to MTV. No wonder our country has changed so much.

I am 54 and remember sending a drawing with my picture. The drawing showed me swinging a dog in one hand and a cat in the other and the caption said,"Don't swing dogs and cats by their tails".He rubbed his chin and looked up with a smile, looked off camera, and then back, smiled, and said with a chuckle"Now don't any of you try this."I was 10 at the time.Anyone remember Captain Kangaroo?

I loved Sheriff John! He appeared in person at the opening of the ToysRUs in Torrance, CA when I was a kid... he was my first in person celebrity!

Oh my God. I found this purely by accident. I was born in 1953 in Los Angeles. Sheriff John was part of my early formative life. Back in the 70's and 80's, a band I played in did a version of, "Put another Candle on the Birthday Cake," when someome came up to us and asked us to sing Happy Birthday. We all grew up with Sheriff John. This video makes me shiver. We have lost so much. I have tears. Thank You John. Your impact was so important on the youth of that time. God Bless
