Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" was a song by the rock and roll group, The Hollies, and released on February 1, 1972 as a single on the Parlophone Records label. It was released soon after Allan Clarke, who was featured on lead guitar as well as lead vocal had left the group, from their album "Distant Light" (1970). As the group had just left EMI/Parlophone and signed with Polydor, they did not promote the song. However it became a No. 2 hit in the United States, their greatest ever singles success there. It was inspired and in the style of the rock and roll group Creedence Clearwater Revival, and on being reactivated by EMI in Britain a few months later, it reached No. 32. The song is notable in that it features Clarke playing rhythm guitar, something he rarely did (Clarke came up with the song's signature guitar rhythm that opens the song). I always thought this song should have a killer guitar solo in the middle. The intro arpeggio is great, but then not much happening after that.

One of the greatest, greatest songs ever! Loved it ever since I was like 6 years old. If you can't get excited about this song...it's because you've got no blood left in your body (and you're officially dead!). Thanks a million for posting this awesome vid!

Yea "the Hollies" This song was well written definitely there best. Brings back a lot of memories. And its a good tune to crank up loud because of the sound quality and turn the bass up to.

You are right. Between the bass line, and that classic rock voice; this is the best!

The Hollies are one of my favorite groups and I wasn't saying The Hollies copied Creedence Clearwater at all. Only saying this song has musical influences from Creedence and The Stones. There is no work of art or music that is 100 per cent original but that doesn't stop a great group like The Hollies from being unique. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
