Love sco's licks ! This solo works better than the other much longer Kirin beer festival version also on Youtube.

As a guitarist, Scos my Idol, but for me,Lovano steals the show here. I always think Scofield tends to raise his game when he plays with a horn player.

Let's define traditional then, because Django isn't exactly bop to me.
I still think this is pretty straight ahead, especially for Sco. I think the reason you might group this in with all his other stuff is because his modern style of playing does shine through, but that's just the way he plays.

good traditional player- hell no
dont get me wrong, hes great modern player. But playing django stuff or early traditinal jazz is not him at all.

This is the most bop-oriented thing i've ever seen sco do..
it's good to see that not only is he a wicked modern jazz guy, but also a good traditional player.
P.s.
He plays the blues nicely too.

John Scofield - guitar
Joe Lovano - tenor saxophone
Anthony Cox - bass
John Riley - drums
Very good group. I really don't Lovano's playing or Scofield's, but this was a pretty good performance. I was more impressed with Anthony Cox and John Riley more than Sco and Lovano.
I prefer Scofield's and Lovano's melodic side. |
