I think they tried to anchor. The family that took these pics and are in them on the beach are wonderful people that just happened to live on this beach. They just witnessed it happening, filmed it and called authorities.

A large boat sank today 10.7.09. I was out bodyboarding 2-4 ft. at CDM today and out of nowhere a flotilla of rescue craft appeared but the boat was a total loss thrashed against the jetty.

I'd say good example of just what to do. Stand back and watch it sink from a safe distance.
exon12 - Generally the coasties won't rescue a boat unless it is causing a hazard to navigation or endangering people. They leave it to be salvaged later, as they should as they are putting themselves in danger to try to rescue the property. While this is a nice boat(?), it's not worth anyone getting hurt over.
