I utterly agree with you. I had been a swimmer once and was told to keep my head a bit lifted, to look in front of me. With the head down it actually means to have a greater water resistance

I don't completely agree with taking my hands way out of the water at 170 but everyone has their own style and should do what works for them. anyway, this guy is right about the basics for freestyle/front crawl... practice is best of course

I really think that you shouldn't be keeping your head down. I'm on a swim team now and our coatch tells us to look forward a little. So that our heads are more arrow-dinamic in a way. So this may or may not be right, but personally, looking a bit forwards makes me go faster.
