October 2008 After ten years of conflict, Nepals feudal system has finally crumbled. As one of the most violent Maoist leaders is voted Prime Minister, we ask, can Nepals new republic find the peace it so desperately needs? The struggle cost the lives of 13,000 people and denied the country millions of tourist dollars. Headmasters were executed in schools and their children stolen for re-education. In the village of Beni, a shocking attack against government officials spilled into the streets.

The Nepalese Royal Family ruled a cult of personality who propograndized themselves as gods(what better way to make the people follow them blindly). Now looking at North Korea, this is the commie version of Nepal with its commie gov. propogandizing Kim Il Sung and Jong Il as gods. and with Kim Jong Il dying or already dead. The commie NK gov will go the way of the Nepal Royal family.

The Maoist have a great guerilla miltary people's war tactics, unfortunately they historically suck at governing nations when they actually take over. This is shown in Maoist China and Cambodia(Pol Pot and the killing fields). Now it remains to be seen what they do next... If Nepal goes the way of Cambodia, then I think I can see India intervening to oust the gov.

As a North American who works with a Nepali I can't blame Nepalis one bit for bringing in a communist communist leader. The person I work with is so corrupt he probably screws his socks on. He refuses to do so many jobs and is possibly the most manipulative person in getting out of work I have ever met. I can't blame the Communists one bit for what they've done to many of his kind. With people like that running a country communism is a big step forward.

A democracy is ruled by the majority, whereas a republic is ruled by the law. A democratic republic would then be a country that allows its majority to strongly impact its government (e.g. presidential elections), and is not ruled by a hereditary monarch.

i got a tough one for you to think about. suppose tibet is an independant country ruled by an absolute theocrat. how would you call it - republic or kingdom or "????" of tibet? maybe there is no english/latin root for such an archaic form of goverance, isn't it?
