I have. It especially happens with beginners with bad conditioning. It happens too with people who put the barbell too close to their neck inhibiting blood flow through the carotid arteries.

Kipping chins are pretty cool. They raise the centre of gravity so that they can let the legs drop. This makes them weightless so you're pulling up your torso, mainly. By the time the weight catches, you're at the top of the chin and can hold it isometrically even if you normally couldn't get up there concentrically. When he says to use the hip in the overhead press, does he mean the hip flexors, by hyperextending the hip? I would be too tempted to extend the spine instead to try and use abs.

LOL anyone notice the two in the back? Their chinups are WICKED. So thats how you use your hips lol

I've never seen anyone black out after holding their breath, unless they go past their limit. I mean it's only like 5 seconds or less. Anywho, Mark teaches them to do it so they can keep their core and body tight and stable....or something like that

yeah you know more than coach Mark Rippetoe. who the heck are you?

v. good but his breathing is incorrect - he should breath out during the positive phase of the lift; instead he holds his breath. This can be very dangerous particularly if you train alone as it can potentially cause blackouts - especially for inexperienced lifters.

I hope Rippetoe releases some kind of DVD about barbell instruction; I own both SS and PP, but find these videos to be much more helpful in "visualizing" proper positioning.

Well you could but that would not improve your press and strength ability. You could do that for conditioning and strength endurance no doubt, but for overall strength development it does not make much sense because it eliminates part of the movement for the arms/shoulders.

I was actually looking at eventually working my way up to a level 3 weightlifting Coach and maybe CSCS :), and I looked up the overhead press vs. push press, along with Crossfit total fitness 3 lift. This may just my erge to push more weight, but couldn't you do a push press instead of a straight press (as long as your feet stayed planted, and you didn't arch your back)?

The interesting stuff is what happens when he takes off the jeans and DOES the warm up which happens a lot. For an old guy he is far too strong. His students are the real crazy thing though. For the same accreditations you would need to coach a national record deadlifter, squatter and some other record breakers ;)
