Old Tibet had no schools at all, and an illiteracy rate of 95 percent. Now, the enrollment ratio for children in Tibet is as high as 96.5 percent. Over 500,000 students are receiving bilingual education in Tibetan and Chinese at all levels of the educational system. In 2006 only, the government invested more than two billion yuan to develop education in the region, and more than 60 Tibetan studies institutes have been established nationwide.
