Yes, MusicDude86 about 10 boys in his school came down with polio. He couldn't participate in high school athletics being in a wheel chair. So he sang to his classmates to amuse them. A teacher noticed what a nice voice he had. And put him with a voice coach within the school system. And the rest is history.

It wouldn't sound strange to sing with your full voice as long as you know how to control it and make smooth transitions between chest and head voice. Many a popular singer has done this...Roy Orbison was phenomenal at this, singing in his low range and working his way up. Thanks for letting me in on what you know. P.S. Did Ray himself tell you that he was trained in operatic singing?
