Walter Gieseking was born 1895 so is this recording really him?

In fact Debussy and Ravel have been recognised as classiks between 1920 /1940 by means of Gieseking's interpretations. He was their apostle. Clearness, sonority'care and emotionality are between his qualities.

the tempo is very good. It fits with the player.. the emotion doesnt go away there.. just listen. My point is that there isnt only 1 way to play this piece. Only thing you can expect to be in this piece is the emotion. You can here many players on youtube who just don't seem to listen to what they are playing.

Thanks, there are not that many Gieseking records on youtube. And it's nice to here a pre- '50s Debussy item of his... ----------------------------- Rolf, Netherlands. I am a collector of classical 78's and lp's Click "otterhouse" above to see (and hear!) some of my collection.

I love this tempo and Geisekings general overall approach to Debussy, only very occasionally he misinterprets. If played at a slower tempo the tune risks being sentimentalized which is unfortunately the norm nowadays (as judging by the comments).

What was the painting with the woman in yellow smoking against a red background?

The Mischa Levitzki recording is also excellent.

Gieseking's rendition is beautifully interepted. Thanks for posting this one.

Que grande es Debussy! Si en el paraíso hay música, seguramente será parecida a esta !
