I know THAT, by stating "Communist" Russia I am specifying the period when Russia was under Soviet rule.
The Prefix to the location name specifies the era. It's obvious like Nazi Germany or Edwardian England; you wouldn't say "But the Nazis are gone and the monarch of England is Elizabeth the second by 2008?".

dude Russia isn't communist anymore. China is.

What do you think of my analysis of your question, AmericanCyrano? Does it seem to make sense? It was a very interesting hypothetical situation in the context of free speech.

... were not at least partially if not completely responsible for bringing about the events which would instigate her death.
Another possible answer is that, supposing she does not harm herself in anyway, the intent of your comment was either to cause her great distress as the result of what you consider a joke. This distress seems to have a different colour to it than a mere joke or insult, because of a) her history and b) the severity and specificity of the comment.

It seems as though there are two possible answers to this. One is that, depending on your intent, you could and ought to be held responsible; that is, if your intention was to make her feel so awful as to kill herself and you knew that she would do so as a result of your comment then it seems you ought to be held responsible. Because you intentionally and knowingly set gave her a stimulus to which she had been conditioned to so tragically act, it seems as though it would be absurd to say you...

HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION:
I hear that a girl in my class is battling anorexia for reasons beyond her control, say, her mother abusively criticized her growing up... then exercise my right to free speech and I tell the girl that she's a fat pig and she should kill herself. Even IF she's "strong" enough to not ACTUALLY commit suicide over it, and even though I didn't ACTUALLY commit physical violence against her, my comment could still do her SERIOUS harm.
Am I to be held responsible for this?

I think what I meant is others have the right to not hear offensive things. Like making comments about racism and discrimmination in front of a person. I think there needs to be decorum in our society. |
