i never said the surge didn't work. I said it worked for a number of various reasons, and I said you could put a million troops in there, it still wouldn't work without Iraqi cooperation. enough said. those are plain facts. and logic too.

Just admit you think the surge didn't work, not a full blown 500 word piece of crap stating false information.
jhompland (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
The surge worked, sure, but in large thanks to Iraqi leaders/religious leaders like Moqtada Al Sadr. Here's the point, you could put a million US troops into Iraq and it would have no effect unless Iraqi leaders, and Iraqis themselves actually make efforts to negotiate and talk. Most Iraqis are happy that Saddam is gone, but I would also argue that most Iraqis want us out now. Iraqi security forces may not be as well trained, but they'd have more credibility to Iraqi civilians than US troops.

Again making up excuses. You can't deny the fact that the surge work, I never said they were pro American, they were just happy that U.S troops liberated them from tyranny and genocide.
jhompland (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
The surge worked mainly because religious leaders like Moqtada Al Sadr told his followers to put down their weapons. They are in no way pro-American, and leaders like Al Sadr do not want Americans in Iraq. Shias make up 60% of the population, and were among the groups that were targeted most by Saddam. Yet, the large majority of shia want US troops out. 50,000 people protested in Baghdad just the other day! 1 million US troops won't be able to make Iraq a true democracy. Only Iraqis can.

Funny then why was I told the large majority of Iraqi's were greeted as liberators BY Iraqi's themselves? They are better off then they were in 2002, while their are shortages of supplies, electricity, water etc, we've accomplished a lot there and the surge did work. Theres still a lot to be done though. We didn't bring Al Qaeda to Iraq the insurgents and Baath loyalists did because they realized that Coalition forces were kicking their asses.

The large majority of Iraqis despised Saddam, especially Kurds, who were tortured and gassed to death in Halabja and other places during the Al Anfal campaign. But this isn't black and white. Iraqis aren't better off today, and yes, it is largely due to the insurgents. But whether you like it or not, the US was not greeted as liberators, Shias (60% of the population) are turning to Iran, and sunnis (20%) were better off under Saddam. We brought Al Qaida to Iraq, no one else.

Really? I used to work with several Iraqi immigrants who fled Iraq a yr after we went in there because of insurgents threatening to kill them. They told me horrible stories of how their friends and relatives were gassed, tortured, raped and slaughtered by the government. When our troops arrived in their village they were greeted as SAVIORS not invaders.
