IT'S ABOUT TIME THE STAMPEDERS GET THE CREDIT THEY DESERVE ESPECIALLY IN THE AMERICAN MUSIC SCENE. THEY HAIL FROM CALGARY ALBERTA AND STARTED WITH 6 GUYS IN THE MID 60'S IT WAS SLOWLY WHITTLED DOWN TO 3 BY '69. THIS '70 OFFERING IS A CLASSIC SONG WHICH NEVER GOT IT'S DUE IN THE STATES. DESPITE IT'S TREMENDOUS POPULARITY IN CANADA #2 AND WITH 19 WEEKS OF STAYING POWER IT WAS AS POPULAR AS SWEET CITY WOMAN. THE ONLY REASON WHY I THINK IT WAS IGNORED IN THE STATES WAS ITS' REFERENCE TO THE WAR IN 'NAM. WITH THE GROWING DISCONTENT OF THE WAR AND THE INSURRECTION OF THE MIDDLE CLASS AFTER MAY 4 1970(KENT STATE). THE SENSITIVITY OF THAT TOPIC WOULD BE TO RAW FOR THE PUBLIC TO HEAR SO IT WAS BETTER NOT TO ROCK THE BOAT THEN PLAY A SONG THAT REALLY SPOKE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE DURING THIS TUMULTUOUS PERIOD. I BELIEVE THIS WAS CALLED CENSORSHIP THE VERY THING THE HIPPIE GENERATION WAS PROTESTING AGAINST AND FIGHTING FOR THE FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION. WELL THIS SONG MUST HAVE FRIGHTENED THE DECISION MAKERS OF THE RADIO INDUSTRY AND IT COULD ONLY FIND POLYDOR A RELATIVELY NEW LABEL IN THE STATES IN 70. AND THE FACT THAT I COULD ONLY FIND A PROMO COPY OF THIS U.S. SINGLE TELLS ME NOT ONLY IT WAS POORLY RECEIVED BUT NO STOCK COPIES WERE EVER MADE. I JUST HOPE THIS SONG GETS A FAVOURABLE RESPONSE. IN MY OPINION ONCE YOU HEAR IT MOST OF YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO RELATE TO ITS MESSAGE. TOKENHIPPIE PS IT'S MUCH MORE PROFOUND THAN SWEET CITY WOMAN.

this is just a song, it has nothing to do with vietnam

This song had nothing to do with Vietnam, no disrespect intended. The song was re-recorded in 1998, and Rich Dodson added a bridge, "I hear the bugle call again, soon they'll be here and the dying will begin..", Rich is a civil war buff. Spent last weekend with the Stampeders at 2 of their shows and have talked to Rich about this song. The new recording is awesome, from the album Sure Beats Working, which is another great song. Enjoyed your comments anyways, interesting analogy. Jeff Reid

Carry Me, Oh My Lady, and Minstrel Gypsy: a trio of excellent tunes from a fine group. Thanks for posting.

one song the Yanks missed 'plling' was "Summer Side of Life" by Gordon Lightfoot..which was his version of what it was ike..for young men to head to the Nam..an don't even argue what I'm saying..because that is STRAIGHT from Gordon Lightfoot himself..they yanked his "Black Day in July"..this is one damn fine toon..the Stampeders were huge..thnx for the info..

one more thing. We did this song in my 20c History class for Vietnam, but listening to the lyrics, I couldn't help that it could be a soldier of the US Civil War singing it too.

my gran played this all the time when I was little. It is older than me, but I love it. Been looking for this song for awhile. Thanks so much for posting.

Thanks for posting this wonderful classic! It reminds me of when I was at University of Toronto and heading to my parents place in Fenelon Fallson weekends. Good memories.....How the years pass!
